Free Tech for Educators: Where I’d Like to Go

I originally wrote this blog post and recorded the video in 2021 while thinking about back-to-school icebreaker activities. The activity is also ideal for Geography Awareness Week.

As the new school year kicks off a lot, you might find yourself looking for new ideas to break the ice and get to know your new students while getting to know each other. One thing I always ask my students is “where would you go if you could go anywhere today?” Recently, I started thinking about turning this question into a prompt for an activity in which students learn a bit more about Google Drawings.

The idea is for students to place themselves virtually anywhere in the world through the use of Google Drawings. To do this, students must first find a photo of themselves and remove the background from it. photo scissors makes it quick and easy to remove the background and then upload a new image without the background. Once they have a photo of themselves, students open Google Drawings where they insert an image of the place they want to visit or revisit. Finally, they then insert their profile picture over the background image in Google Drawings. These steps may seem complicated, but they are not. In this short video I show the whole process.

As I mention in the video above, you can edit this activity to complete with Google Slides or Google Jamboard. And, as the video above also shows, you can use Google Classroom to hand out a template for the assignment.
