Music is my eldest daughter’s favorite special class at her primary school. The other day when I picked her up from school, we talked about music lessons and how I played trumpet, trombone and tuba at school. This prompted her to ask how to play these instruments, which led to my impromptu explanation of how to buzz your lips into a brass mouthpiece. A better explanation of how brass produces sound can be found in a TED-Ed lesson on the subject.
How Brass Works is a TED-Ed lesson that provides insight into how sound is produced and modified by trumpets, trombones, and tubas. The lesson in the video is pretty basic, but it does a good job of clearly explaining how a musician makes music on a brass instrument.
