NORFOLK — Norfolk Public Schools will hold public hearings throughout December to learn more about the division’s upcoming facilities, academic programs and budget.

At 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, the public will be able to comment on the study “Re-Imagine Maury High School: Phase II Modernization Versus Replacement Feasibility Study” as well as the curriculum offered by Ruffner Middle School for students in grades 3-8.

Four Maury renovation or demolition and reconstruction projects, more than a century old, were submitted for public opinion in September and October. Details of the plans are available on the division’s website website.

At the November 2 meeting, the school board received the information gathered from the community engagement meetings and was recommended to move forward with a plan that would replace the building. According to HBA Architecture’s presentation to council, a four-storey replacement option (Option B2) received the most positive feedback at these meetings, and this plan was recommended to council.

During the public hearing, the school board will also hear comments on Ruffner’s school programs. You will find information on this subject on the division’s website. website as well. Students who were enrolled at Tidewater Park Elementary School, which the board voted to close in March, are expected to transfer to Ruffner Academy. The school will be a coeducational school for students in grades 3-8, and the proposed academic program focuses on career exploration and pathways.

On December 14, the board will hold a public hearing on the operating budget for the 2023-24 fiscal year.

Public hearings can be viewed in person or live, on YouTube or on WNPS Ch. 47.

Those unable to attend but still wish to submit comments can email schoolboard@nps.k12.va.us by 4:30 p.m. the day before the meeting. According to a press release, the division cannot guarantee anonymity and citizens are instructed not to “post for public comment” or “not post for public comment” in the email.
