BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2023 MetroDesk Media, LLC) – The Palm Beach County School Board is set to ratify a proclamation establishing January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. The local International Day tribute comes after Spanish River High School’s Wiliam Latson said in an email to a parent that the Holocaust was not a “fact”. He was fired, sued, reinstated, fired again, and continues to fight the school district in court.
The following is the text of the proclamation to be approved at the Palm Beach County School Board meeting on January 18.
WHILE, International Holocaust Remembrance Day marks the 78th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz concentration camp and;
WHILE, days earlier, the Schutzstaffels, commonly known as the SS, forced nearly 60,000 prisoners to evacuate the concentration camp and embark on the infamous death marches, which claimed the lives of thousands of innocent people , and ;
WHILE, On November 1, 2005, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution to designate January 27 as the International Day of Remembrance in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust, the day on which the world will each year remember the Holocaust and its victims, and;
WHILE, on this anniversary, the Palm Beach County School District must recommit to fighting the global rise of anti-Semitism and must always remember the terrible events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against hatred, persecution and tyranny, and;
WHILE, the Palm Beach County School District should be actively committed to the principles of individual liberty in a just society, and;
WHILE, the commemoration of this unprecedented event reminds us all of our solemn duty to keep alive the memory of the millions of people who perished during the Holocaust and to ensure, through education and mutual respect, that acts of genocide never happen again.
NOW LET IT BE RESOLVED that the Superintendent and the Palm Beach County School Board hereby proclaim Friday, January 27, 2023 International Holocaust Remembrance Day in memory of the victims of the Holocaust and in honor of the survivors, as well as the rescuers and liberators, and further proclaim that we should work to promote human dignity and confront hatred wherever it occurs.
Dated this eighteenth day of January two thousand and twenty-three, at West Palm Beach, Florida.
